A brand new year means a host of new and exciting events to look forward to! Whether you’re a local or planning to visit our spectacular seaside town in 2020, we have selected some of our favourite events we think you should know about. So, what are some of the things to do around Knysna this year?

February & March 2020

Knysna Bull Festival

The Bull is South Africa’s only individual staged mountain bike race and takes place over 4 days. Each stage consists of 60-70kms of varying terrain built to test strength and endurance – this is not a race to trifle with! For a full breakdown of this event, read our blog.

Knysna Literary Festival

This ever-popular festival is now entering its 10th year and will take place from 06-08 March 2020. Once again generously sponsored by Pam Golding, this year’s Literary Festival promises festival favourites such as the ‘Fate of the Nation’ debated, an economic panel and the Delicious World Journey as well as some new and exciting fixtures. A quick warning: tickets are already flying out the door so if this is an event you want to attend, act quickly!

Timber Festival

The annual Timber Festival will take place from 13-15 March 2020 and have some fantastic family-friendly entertainment and interesting timber-based history of the area on offer. What’s more, the festival is conveniently located just down the road from Knysna Hollow Country Estate.

June & July

Knysna Cycle Tour

Are you ready for Knysna’s annual Cycle Tour? With a range of races on offer, it’s the event for the whole family. Here is a breakdown of what’s on offer:

  • 23 June: Children’s Events
  • 27 June: Mountain Bikes across 15km, 30km, 50km and 80km
  • 28 June: Road Races 50km and 116km

Knysna Oyster Festival

Arguably the most popular and awaited event of the year, the Knysna Oyster Festival. This year, the event will start on 28 June and continue until 05 July 2020 with a host of fantastic events, activities. Keep an eye on the Knysna Oyster Festival Facebook Page for live updates on what you can look forward to.

Knysna Forest Marathon

The Knysna Forest Marathon is most commonly described as a tough yet beautiful track that offers highlights found nowhere else in the world. Whether you trot around the Half Marathon course (21km) or face the Full Marathon distance (42km) participants can expect truly incredible views across the Knysna Lagoon and The Knysna Heads. Entries open on 29 February 2020 and typically sell like hotcakes so be sure to plan early.

September & October

Dr. Evil Classic

Gear up for an intense 3-day event that can be taken on individually or as a team. Dr. Evil is set to take place from 17-19 September 2020 with registration and briefing on Wednesday 16 September. Entries are open and we recommend you start training now!

Karoo To Coast

Another exciting cycle race fixture for the year is the Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge where participants will take on a 100km off-road race from Uniondale to Knysna along Price Alfred’s Pass. Only 4500 entries will be made available for the race on Saturday 19 September 2020 at a cost of R650.

Knysna Film Festival

Knocking its debut out the park last year the Knysna Film Festival is making a comeback in 2020. Although the dates have yet to be confirmed, it’s likely to be the end of October – keep an eye on their official website for updates.
