Get Ready For The Knysna Forest Marathon
July is on the not-too-distant horizon, and that means one thing in our books: The approach of the Knysna Forest Marathon!
Scheduled for Saturday, 5 July 2025, this year’s race is more special than ever – marking the 40th edition of the event. A part of the celebrated Knysna Oyster Festival, the marathon attracts thousands of runners and visitors to our picturesque corner of the Garden Route each winter – whether aiming for a personal best or simply wanting to be part of a fun sporting event.
Knysna Hollow Country Estate provides the perfect location to stay for the duration of your race weekend – and for a little extra R&R afterwards.
Let’s get into the details of the day! And your stay…

Four Decades And Counting
Founded by the Knysna Marathon Club in 1984 and dreamt up as a way to bring the beauty of the Garden Route’s indigenous forests to the wider running community, the Knysna Forest Marathon has grown from a local race into a nationally recognised event in a short space of time.
Over the years, the race has seen elite athletes, club runners, first-time half-marathoners, and even fancy-dressers come together to share in a truly special experience.
Now in its 40th year, the 2025 Knysna Forest Marathon will not only celebrate athletic achievement, but also honour the legacy of a race that has become an integral part of Knysna’s identity.
Look out for exciting extras to this year’s festivities, like additional celebrations, music acts, commemorative merch and a nostalgic nod to the marathon’s journey through the decades.
Setting The Scene
Depending on where you’re at on your running journey, participants can choose between the 42,2 km full marathon and the 21,1 km half-marathon.
The routes of both distances twist and turn through the heart of the Knysna Forest, offering runners an atmospheric and tranquil setting unlike any other on the road-running calendar. Instead of urban streets and city landmarks, you’ll find gravel forestry roads, towering yellowwood trees and the scent of damp earth and pine in the morning air.
Both races feature sections of climbing and descent, but are suitable for road runners looking for an off-road challenge that’s neither too technical nor extreme. The full marathon includes a few steeper hills, notably Simola Hill towards the end, where cheers from spectators help many find that final bit of strength to push on to the finish line.
The race concludes at the Knysna High School Sports Grounds, where a festive finish awaits. Runners are welcomed with medals, hydration stations, and a bustling race village featuring food stalls, music, massage zones, and local craft stands. It’s a perfect space for runners and their supporters to reconnect after the race, swap stories and share in the celebration.
