As cooler weather starts to descend across the Western Cape, you might think it marks the end of the busy season for the Garden Route. But the onset of rainy days marks the start of a jam-packed calendar for the coastal town of Knysna – from festivals and sporting events to annual motor shows, there’s something to interest everyone!
If you’re looking to get out and about, here are some of the upcoming events that you won’t want to miss when visiting Knysna:
17 to 20 March Peacock Festival
March 2022 saw the birth of the new and vibrant Knysna Peacock Festival. Living up to its name, the festival features a four-day celebration of art, music, theatre, film and other creative expressions. Held at the Moth Hall, Peacock Festival also includes an exhibition of local talent from some of the area’s best emerging creatives. This event formed the start of a new chapter for Knysna and the LGBTQIA+ community.

4 to 7 May 2023 Simola Hillclimb
As the sun sets on Knysna’s beautiful landscape, you can enjoy one of South Africa’s premier motorsport events – Simola Hillclimb. The Knysna Speed Festival has garnered international appeal attracting motor enthusiasts from all over the globe. Held right on the doorstep of Knysna Hollow, you can enjoy a front-row seat and watch as world-class drivers take their powerful cars to the limit in a thrilling battle for supremacy up the steepest slopes of Simola.

30 June to 9 July 2023 Knysna Oyster Festival
Arguably the highlight of the calendar year, Knysna Oyster Festival is the town’s longest running event and brings thousands of visitors to the greater Knysna area every year. If oysters are not your thing, don’t despair – the festival promises plenty of great food, live sporting events and loads of entertainment for families. The annual festival is only picking up speed and we can’t wait to see what the 2023 event holds.

1 to 3 July Knysna Cycle Tour
The three day MTB event takes place this year from 1 to 3 July during the Oyster Festival. More experienced riders can tackle 42km and 82km MTB routes through the majestic Knysna indigenous forest on Day 2. Day 3 holds MTB rides including a 40km in the Knysna Forest including technical sections. The cycle tour is a great opportunity to experience the favourite rides of Knysna locals.

8 July Knysna Forest Marathon
The Knysna Forest Marathon is an iconic 42.2km run that goes through the indigenous forest of Knysna, taking runners on a journey of sights, sounds and smells around the enchanting Garden Route town. With 2,000 runners from all over the world expected to join this year’s event, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.

22 to 29 July Rastafari Earth Festival
The Rasta Earth Festival is a week-long celebration of the rich and diverse Rastafarian culture with art at its heart. The Rasta Earth Festival showcases the Rastafarian way of life, the music, the food and the philosophy behind this sometimes mis-understood faith.

24 September 2023 CCPP Karoo to Coast
The Lions of Knysna and Uniondale’s annual Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge takes place 24 September for the 23rd year. The 100km off-road race from Uniondale to Knysna via the Prince Alfred’s Pass is scenic and challenging and riders are encouraged to train sufficiently for this event to maximize the enjoyment of the experience.
