The Knysna Forest Marathon 2019
Each year the quaint seaside town of Knysna plays host to the much-loved Oyster Festival. Hundreds flock to the area to enjoy various activities and events on offer, one of the more popular and attended being the annual Momentum Knysna Forest Marathon in June. This year’s marathon is set to take place on Friday 28 June 2019 and, as always, entries are selling like hotcakes. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming run!
The Knysna Forest Marathon is most commonly described as a tough yet beautiful track that offers highlights found nowhere else in the world as it takes place deep in the forest. Whether you’re planning to take a trot around the Half Marathon course (21km) or face the Full Marathon distance (42km) participants can expect truly incredible views across the Knysna Lagoon and The Knysna Heads.
The Nitty Gritty Details
Entries for both distances opened on 4 March 2019 and are limited to a total of 1,250 for the Full Marathon and 7,350 for the Half Marathon both of which can be purchased from the Knysna Marathon Club Portal.
Unfortunately, there are no up- or downgrades or substitutions options available – run the race or lose the entry. If you’re not sure which race you’re up for, there is an option to enter both and select your preferred distance on registration day 28 June 2019.
How Do I Get There?
As the race takes place deep in the Knysna Forest and has over 8,000 participants event taxis are on hand to transport you from Loerie Park to the start and back afterwards. Pick-ups begin at 04h30 with free tea, coffee, and biscuits in the Bedouin tent near the start.
When Do I Run & How Much Will It Cost?
The Half Marathon commences at 08h00 with a cut-off time of 11h30. Unlicensed runner entries are R193.00 while licensed pay R155.00. There is also a minimum age of 16 years old.
The Full Marathon begins at 07h00 at cuts-off at 12h30. Licensed athletes pay R165.00 while unlicensed entries cost R203.00. The minimum age requirement is 20 years old.

If this is your first Momentum Knysna Forest Marathon, there is a tradition to be aware of. Each year participants come to the start dressed warmly in a fluffy jersey or with a blanket wrapped around their shoulders due to the chilly conditions. The idea is to wear something you’re happy to give away. As the race begins and the first climb hits, runners get really toasty really fast and shed this extra layer which is when charities and underprivileged residents of the town are ready and waiting to collect to distribute amongst the less fortunate for the winter.
This is, of course, voluntary but is always a nice way to donate clothes you no longer wear, or blankets you don’t use that someone else could benefit from.
