Seasoned travellers will undoubtedly have their favourite spot to soak up the sun in Knysna, and using our local knowledge, we’ve listed the top 5 Knysna beaches not to be missed during your holiday.
Take a look at our comprehensive guide below!
1. Brenton-on-Sea Beach:
Nestled amid lush coastal vegetation south of central Knysna, Brenton-on-Sea Beach boasts a pristine expanse of 8km of golden sand with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Ideal for leisurely strolls and picnics, the beach features tidal pools and perfect swimming conditions, offering both tranquility and plenty of avenues for exploration for families with children.

2. Buffalo Bay (Buffelsbaai):
A crescent shaped, sheltered beach between George and Knysna, Buffalo Bay, or Buffelsbaai, is a family-favorite beach renowned for its warm waters, perfect for swimming, and a lengthy sandy shoreline conducive to sunbathing and beach games.
Surrounded by indigenous coastal fynbos, it sets the stage for a day of seaside enjoyment. If you’re up for it, you can even walk the long sandy stretch from Brenton to Buffels.

3. Noetzie Beach:
Tucked away in a remote fairy-tale setting, Noetzie Beach captivates local and international visitors with dramatic cliffs and historic castles. Accessible via a wooden boardwalk, this beach offers a unique escape where natural beauty and the quirky charm of Knysna’s coastline converge. First-timers be warned – beach access includes quite a trek, but it is all worth it as it is one of the last remaining homes for the very rare African Black Oystercatcher – so keen birders keep your eyes peeled.

4. Plettenberg Bay Beach:
A short drive from Knysna, Plettenberg Bay is home to one of the most famous and best loved beaches on the Garden Route. Plett Beach boasts pristine white sands and turquoise waters and is a hotspot for water sports, sunbathing, and beachside dining. Visitors from far and wide flock to Plett for the vibrant atmosphere against the backdrop of stunning coastal scenery – but be careful it can be incredibly busy during school summer holidays.

5. Leisure Isle Beach:
Located in a picturesque setting along Knysna Lagoon, Leisure Isle beach provides a serene escape with calm waters and breathtaking views. Accessible via a causeway, Leisure Isle Beach is perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat. Shallow lagoon waters invite swimming and kayaking, while sandy shores beckon relaxation in a laid-back atmosphere. This is a great option for families with young children.
