There are always plenty of options when it comes to things to do in Knysna. This picturesque seaside town is constantly teeming with activity throughout the year and something to suit everyone. If you are starting to plan your trip, make sure to include some of our top things to do in Knsyna;

1. Cruise along the Knysna Lagoon

A trip to Knysna simply isn’t complete without an adventure along the lagoon. Cruise along smooth waters across the estuary to the famous Knysna Heads, Thesen Island, Leisure Island, and Featherbed Nature Reserve before returning to the waterfront. We suggest John Benn or River Cat ferries as your cruise captains.

2. Dine at the East Head Café

A favourite with locals and visitors alike, the East Head Café is located in prime position overlooking the mouth of the Knysna Lagoon. Sit out on the deck when the weather is fair and enjoy delicious food paired with spectacular views.

3. Breakfast at île de pain

Situated on Thesen Island, this café-style restaurant specializes in tantalizing breakfasts and lunches featuring artisanal baked goods and beverages. Open from 08h00 to 15h00, this is a must during your stay.

4. Knysna Elephant Park

A firm family-friendly favourite has to be the Knysna Elephant Park. Visit the sanctuary an take the opportunity to walk among gentle giants and even feed them. Each tour takes around an hour and typically depart half hourly between 08h30 and 16h30 daily. As adventure is an appetite-building affair, make sure to stop by the restaurant before you go.

5. Featherbed Nature Reserve

Found on the Western Head of Knysna, and only accessible by ferry, this stretch of pristine paradise is just waiting to be explored. Pack a picnic and explore a stunning South African Heritage Site or take a walk and enjoy the on-site restaurant.

6. Visit the Beach

Whether the weather is warm or still on the cool side, Knysna’s beautiful Blue Face status beaches – Brenton on Sea and Buffalo Bay – have to be on your list of things to do while in Knysna. During summer, we recommend taking a dip in Buffalo Bay with the entire family; as there are always lifeguards on duty during high season, it’s a wonderful beach for everyone.

7. Hit the Hiking Trails

The entire Garden Route is brimming with fantastic trails ready to be trekked. Two of the most popular spots are Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail and the Otter Trail – both long distance hikes. If you’re looking for a shorter distance, try the Giant Kingfisher Trail or a meander through the Knysna Forest.

8. Enjoy Local Festivals and Events

One of the most popular events throughout the year is undoubtedly the Knysna Oyster Festival in June. If you’re lucky enough to attend, make sure you try some of the area’s famous oysters at 34 Degrees South or Freshline Fisheries.
