The Best Cold Weather Activities in Knysna

Our German friends have a saying: there’s no such thing as bad weather, only ill-suited clothing. It’s a philosophy that applies rather well to Knysna.

Knysna has long been a South African holiday-maker favourite for its beaches and forests, and those same beaches and forests take on a completely different, rather magnificent character when the clouds roll in. The mist settles over the Knysna Lagoon, the ancient yellowwoods harbour even more mystique, and the town empties out just enough to feel like it belongs a little more to you.

That said, Knysna has weathered its share of difficult seasons, and the recent storms and severe weather warnings have been a reminder of just how powerful the elements can be. There’s a strong case to be made that the Knysna Forest is at its most atmospheric in the rain. (We’re talking about a friendly drizzle.) The ancient yellowwoods and ironwoods deepen in colour, the moss gives off an earthy scent, and below the canopy you’ll hear the sound of dripping water as it siphons through the leafy layers of the trees above.

For this reason, we say that a light rain is no reason to stay indoors. Simply pack a waterproof jacket and head into the Garden Route National Park for a morning among some of the oldest trees in South Africa.

We recommend making the trip more about experiencing the forest and less about covering great distances on an epic hike – the trails can get slippery. But on a quiet, misty morning, the forest feels genuinely ancient.

When the rain sets in, Thesen Island is one of the best places to spend a few hours in Knysna. This beautifully converted timber island is home to a collection of independent boutiques, galleries, and coffee shops, all connected by wooden boardwalks and framed by lagoon views.

The island has a genuinely creative spirit. It’s also fun to imagine yourself on an island when the weather is gloomy. Somehow, meals shared with your travelling companions becomes the whole event, rather than something to rush in between activities. You also have no cap on how many hot chocolates you’re allowed to enjoy – bonus points if it’s got marshmallows on top!

Knysna has long been a draw for artists, craftspeople, and collectors, and the town’s antique shops and art gallery scenes are among its most underrated pleasures. A rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse to poke around these kinds of places, discovering treasures – much like a pirate of old!

To discover your next trove, we recommend heading for Knysna’s main street and surrounding lanes – an excellent place to start. Antique-hunting aside, it’s an excellent way to support the local creative community and come home with something that actually means something.

Knysna in the rain is beautiful, but so is the broader Garden Route, and a slow scenic drive on a grey day has its own charm. Head west towards George and the Wilderness Lakes, or east towards Plettenberg Bay and the Tsitsikamma. The forests are dramatic in low cloud, the beaches are wild and windswept, and the farm stalls along the route are warm, well-stocked, and very good for local produce and homemade preserves.

It’s the kind of drive where you stop when something catches your eye, and return to Knysna Hollow in the late afternoon ready for a hot shower and night in front of the TV in your Garden Suite.
