Your Perfect March Long Weekend in Knysna

Planning a Garden Route holiday this March? With the Human Rights Day long weekend on the horizon, there’s never been a better reason to pack your bags and head to Knysna.

Why March is the Best Time to Visit Knysna

If you’ve been searching for the best time to visit Knysna, the answer might surprise you: Right now. March on the Garden Route is a sweet spot that seasoned travellers know well – the school holiday crowds of December and January are long gone, the Indian Ocean is at its warmest, and the light has that lazy, unhurried quality to it that makes every hour feel slow – like a restful holiday.

The Human Rights Day public holiday on 21 March (observed on 23 March) creates a natural long weekend, and for families, couples, and solo travellers alike, it’s the perfect excuse to extend a regular weekend into a proper Knysna getaway.

We like to think of it as one last summer “hurrah” before autumn settles in properly, although you’ll find very little to put you off spending time on the Garden Route, no matter the season!

Your Base for the Long Weekend

Every great Garden Route holiday needs the right base, and Knysna Hollow Country Estate delivers on every count. Set on three hectares of manicured indigenous gardens just minutes from central Knysna, our family-friendly hotel on the Garden Route offers 44 spacious, contemporary Garden Suites, each one private, beautifully appointed and equipped with every amenity you need for a stress-free escape.

Our rooms feature extra-length king-size beds, walk-in rain showers, Nespresso stations, and private patios overlooking lush gardens and one of two sparkling swimming pools.

For families, Knysna Hollow is especially well set up: Kids under 12 sharing with parents stay free on a B&B basis, and family suites with interleading rooms offer everyone their own space. Between the two swimming pools and the playground, your little ones will feel thoroughly entertained and at home, leaving you to observe and relax from a comfy vantage point.

On-site, the Social Eatery & Bar serves fresh, locally sourced South African food throughout the day, with craft beer on tap, bespoke gin and tonics, and a small wine cellar showcasing independent South African estates.

Things to Do in Knysna Over the Long Weekend

Here’s a brief run-down of how we see the ideal long weekend playing out…

Friday: Settle In
Start slowly. Check in, unpack, and let the holiday feeling take hold. A stroll through the estate’s indigenous gardens, an afternoon by the pool, and a relaxed dinner at Social Eatery & Bar is all Friday needs to be – you’re in no rush.

Saturday: Coast and Lagoon
Knysna’s beaches are at their finest in early autumn, and a morning at Brenton-on-Sea or Buffalo Bay is hard to beat. Both offer warm water, wide stretches of sand, and a wonderfully unhurried atmosphere – ideal for families with young children.

In the afternoon, a Knysna Lagoon cruise is one of the great things to do in Knysna at any time of year. Glide past the iconic Knysna Heads or explore the sheltered waters of Featherbed Nature Reserve. Back at the estate, our state-of-the-art padel courts await, and Social Eatery & Bar is the perfect place from which to watch the sun go down.

Sunday: Knysna Forest Hiking
Sunday belongs to the forest. The Knysna Forest, part of the Garden Route National Park, is one of the oldest indigenous forests in South Africa, and in March it is nothing short of magical. Ancient yellowwoods, dappled light, birdsong, and the occasional flash of a Knysna turaco through the canopy – if you’re lucky. Knysna Forest hiking trails range from easy, child-friendly meanders to longer routes for more ambitious walkers.

Monday: Human Rights Day
Round off your Garden Route getaway with a morning rooted in Knysna’s community. Browse the local craft markets for handmade art and fresh produce, or head to one of the many museums and galleries in town to get a feel for this region’s history. Afterwards, enjoy a slow breakfast before turning for home.
